Wilson (1870) notes that the old Norman chapel built by the monks of Holy Island was no longer in existence at his time, having fallen into disrepair by 1750 and replaced by a new building in 1792. Wilson (ibid.) notes: "the font is new; it is the gift of the High Sheriff of the county, Henry Knight Gregson, Esq.. It stands in the southwest corner of the nave". That church was later sold into private hands and converted into a family dwelling. The following add was posted on the web [http://www.kyloechurch.net/about.html] [accessed 18 January 2010: "St Nicholas Church, Kyloe; Built in 1792 on the site of an earlier church dating from around the 1100's. Deconsecrated in the 80's after which it stood derelict for around 20 years. Taken on as a conversion project in 2002, now completed." A floor plan of the coverted church was posted at http://www.smithsgore.co.uk/assets/x/430546 [accessed 18 January 2010]. The HomeMaker UK 6 Sept. 2008 [http://icnewcastle.icnetwork.co.uk/homemaker/news/tm_headline=Room-with-a-pew-at-St-Nicholas%27-Church-House&method=full&objectid=21683536&siteid=50081-name_page.html] [accessed 18 January 2010] notes: " ArticlProperty News Property News from the Newcastle and the North East of England. Room with a pew at St Nicholas' Church House Sep 6 2008 by Karen Wilson, The Journal. Renovating an 18th Century church and converting it into a stunning one-off home has proved a baptism of fire for Ian Bottomley and Sally Onions, but one that has brought with it a great sense of achievement. After eight years of hard slog, the couple have now completed their mammoth task and are selling the Grade II-listed church […] As the church dates back to 1792, the couple were keen to restore all the original features such as stone pillars, timber ceiling trusses and stained glass windows by Clayton & Bell, who also worked on Peterborough Cathedral. They’ve even retained the former baptism font as a feature in the hallway". The font illustrated in the article is one of conventional octagonal design, the basin with quatrefoil-in-a-circle panels, the octagonal-to-square pedestal base moulded; the wooden cover is plain, octagonal and flat. [NB: we have no information on the original font of the earlier church]
