Kelly's Directory of 1873 notes: "The parish church of St. Cuthbert, which was rebuilt in 1807, is to be replaced in 1873 by a handsome structure; it will be in the Geometrical Pointed style, and consist of nave, aisles, and chancel, and north and south chancel aisles, and will contain a beautiful font, to be presented by Mrs. George Arnison in memory of an infant son." This modern font is noted and illustrated in the Parish website [http://www.allendalechurch.co.uk/index_files/Page616.htm] [accessed 12 January 2010]: "The Font is in Cean stone and was the gift of George Arnison, surgeon, in memory of an infant son." This font consists of an octagonal basin, the sides decorated with quatrefoil panels, one of which inscribes 'IHS', on an octagonal stem and a moulded lower base, also octagonal. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat, also modern. [NB: we have no information on the font of the medieval church restored in the 1870s]
