There is an entry for Wingerworth [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SK3867/wingerworth/] [accessed 2 March 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Parish website [http://www.wingerworthchurch.com/Guide/guide1.htm] [accessed 11 January 2010] notes and illustrates an early font recovered: "The font, which is both deep and circular and of plain stone, is Norman. It was found in the 19th century at a nearby farm being used as a cattle trough. It was reinstated in the church and more recently placed in its present position." The old font, of which only the basin survives, is tub-shaped cylindrical, its upper rim showing considerable damage, and now raised on a cylindrical stem and octagonal lower base, both modern. The wooden cover is flat and round, with metal decoration; appears modern, though based on an old design. [cf. Index entry for Wingerworth No. 2 for a later font in use between the 17 and 19th centuries]
