Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Thorney in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SK8573/thorney/] [accessed 13 February 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Pevsner & Williamson (1979) report: "Of the old church two C15 arcades have been re-erected in the churchyard", the rest replaced by the mid-19th century building by Lewis Nocknalls Cottingham (1787-1847). Pevsner & Williamson (ibid.) describe the exterior of the new church as "sumptuous hamfisted Norman". The entry for this parish in the Southwell & Nottingham Church History Project [http://southwellchurches.nottingham.ac.uk/thorney/hintro.php] [accessed 13 February 2018] reports and illustrates two fonts in this church: 1)a large Victorian font: "The font consists of a circular bowl on a circular stem with blind arcading. The oak cover was carved by the Rev Henry Nevile, brother of the Rev Christopher Nevile, to a design by Mr Willson, the clerk of works during the rebuilding of the church [...] The font, pulpit and lectern date from c1850, are made of Caen stone and were all carved by Mr Willson, clerk of works"; and 2)"A damaged font bowl dating from the 12th century is nearby". The old font is a roughly cylindrical basin decorated with an arcade of narrow round arches, its columns with capitals and bases; its surface is much eroded and it has large damaged areas around the upper rim; this source shows its interrior filled with sand at the time.
