The entry for this church in the Historische Gesellschaft Kyllburg (HGK) [https://schmino.de/alt-st-maximin-in-kyllburg/] [accessed 2 July 2022] tells of a 9th-century church with a font here [="Diese Mutterkirche muß ein frühromanisches Bauwerk gewesen sein (9. Jh.), eine Taufkirche mit romanischem Taufstein"]; a Romanesque font was brought over from a nearby church, the mother church, but it is uncertain where exactly that church stood [="Der romanische Taufstein der tatsächlich noch in den heutigen Anlagen von St. Maximin steht, sei damals von Etteldorf nach Kyllburg gebracht worden. Dieser Stein wurde später durch einen neuen, gotischen ersetzt, der uns im Kreuzgang der Stiftskirche erhalten ist. Nach Prof. Paulys Ansicht würde dieser romanische Taufstein aus einer ersten, frühromanischen Kirche auf Sankt Maximiner Bann stammen. Wie gesagt Sicherheit darüber, wo die Mutterkirche stand, gibt es vorläufig nicht."] A later, Gothic font, replaced the older one, but was itself relageted to the parsonage garden, later to be moved to its present location in the cloister; this Gothic font, now badly damaged and eroded, was decorated with heraldic devices. The present font is of late date and made of dark marble, consisting of a hemispheric basin with a large torus-scotia combination at the upper end, raised on a slender octagonal pedestal base wit a splaying lower base of the same shape. The brass dome cover has an orb-and-cross finial. [NB: this is probably the font mentioned in the HGK entry [cf. supra] as being a replica made by Peter Quirin of the late-15th century font at Christchurch in Oxford]
