Cox (1912) notes: "Font is a 'make-up'; Mr. Seddling thinks present square bowl is base of old font." The suggestion makes sense, as the large square basin has the octagonal-to-square design found in bases of some Norman-period fonts, where a spur-like cut in the corners makes the square block octagonal. The support here is a thing circular shaft totally unsuited to the basin; the lower base is also of old design, circular at the top and square below.
