No entries found for Petherwin [North/South] in the Domesday survey. Described in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a round baptismal font of the Early English period, mounted on a central support and four outer colonnettes. Cox (1912) writes: "Arcaded circular font of Polyphant stone, supported on central shaft, and 4 smaller ones, is late or Trans[ition]-Norm[an]." Noted in Pevsner (1970): "Font. C13, circular, on octagnal supports, with flat pointed arches all round (a development of the square type of Egloshayle)." The entry for this church in the Cornwall Historic Churches Trust [https://www.chct.info/histories/south-petherwin-st-paternus/] [accessed 27 February 2018] reports: "The 12th century Norman font has octagonal shafts." A cylindrical basin raised on a central shaft and four (?) outer colonnettes; the basin is decorated with a lightly-incised blind arcade of very narrow pointed arches; the lower base is plain and circular at the top, square and made of blocks lower down. Flat plain cover; modern.
