Suckling (1846-1848) writes: "The Church of this parish was appropriated to the Priory of Bungay by the Countess Gundreda, its foundress, in the reign of Henry II. [i.e., 1154-1189], and became at the Dissolution a perpetual curacy"; there is no mention of a font in Suckling's entry for this parish. The font here is not mentioned in Parker (1855) either. The present baptismal font consists of an octagonal basin decorated with hanging blank shields, the frames on the panels decorated with tiny floral motifs; cherub heads at the angles of the underbowl; the pedestal base is a variant of the usual East Anglian font type, here with clustered colonnettes altermating with buttresses on the sides; on an octagonal plinth. The font is whitewashed. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat, probably modern. The font is similar, though not identical, to the others in this group of Ilketshall churches [cf. corresponding entries in the Index]
