Cox (1912) remarks: "To the disgrace of all concerned, the ancient parish font of Scrooby was actually sold to Americans in 1891." Guilford (1927) notes: "The font has gone to America". The Wellington Avenue United Church of Christ, Chicago [http://waucc.org/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/WorshipBulletin3-1-09.pdf] [accessed 18 October 2009] notes: "Scrooby Baptismal Font, of which Wellington Avenue U.C.C. is the custodian. The font, which dates back to the 14th century, was used in the village church in Scrooby, England. The Congregational Tradition began in this church and later some of its members set sail in the Mayflower for the New World. Scrooby Church is now known as the Church of the Pilgrims becausemany of their children were baptized from this very same font. The Scrooby Font was brought to Chicago in 1884 by a member of the New England Congregational Church in Chicago. When that church burned down in 1936, the font was given over to the care and keeping of Wellington Avenue United Church of Christ".
