Cox (1912) notes: "At N[orth] end of churchyard is a discarded I3th cent. font." Guilford (1927) notes: "The E[arly] E[nglish] font gave way to a Puritan apology in the form of a basin." The Parish web site [http://www.papplewick.org/local/St_Jinfo.htm] [accessed 17 October 2009] notes: "Just inside the door is the old Norman tub font. It was found in the Churchyard, and until its restoration , the tiny marble basin at the back of the church was used." [NB: that marble object must be what Guilford had referred to as "a Puritan apology in the form of a basin"]. Noted in Butler (1953): "Immediately inside the door is the old Norman tub font which for many years lay neglected in a hedge-bottom of the churchyard, but now restored to its proper place. Until this was done the only provision for Baptism was a most inadequate marble bason, which is attached to the wooden partition forming the wall of the choir vestry". Pevsner & Williamson (1979) note two fonts: "Small bowl on wooden column.- The medieval font has been preserved too, ten times the size of the other, of tub shape with very elementary incised decorations."
