There are two entries for this Latton [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU0995/latton/] [accessed 7 June 2018], neither of which mentions priest or church in it. The Victoria County History 'VCH WILTSHIRE Texts in Progress (LATTON) – 05/07 - © University of London' notes: "Fragments of Roman columns that are housed in the church are of unknown provenance". Apparently one such fragment was hollowed out at some point in the past and used as a baptismal font. The object is roughly cylindrical, with fluted sides, the upper end of the basin being rather uneven. At present [November 2001] it rests directly on the floor at the back of the nave and is used as a planter [NB: the church goes back to the Norman period, as attested by the south doorway, but we have no information on when the Roman pragment was used as font]. The entry for this church in the Wiltshire Commmunity History [https://history.wiltshire.gov.uk/community/getchurch.php?id=1277] [accessed 7 June 2018] mentions that the present font is 19th-century, but notes and illustrates two separate objects; one is labelled: "Hollowed Coral Rag Stone of Roman Origin used for Baptisms before the 19th century"; the other is labelled: "Roman Fluted Column in Latton Church". The font in use at present is modern, 19th-century, with a plain square table-top basin with chamfered underbowl, raised on a poligonal stem, lower base and plinth. The wooden cover is square, flat and plain. The modern font is located at the west end of the nave, in the centre, under the tower arch.
