There are seven entries for Carlton [-on-Trent] [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SK7963/carlton-on-trent/] [accessed 8 August 2019], none of which mentions cleric or church in it. White's Directory of 1853 has: "The font is of carved stone and was the gift of the late Mrs Hutton Riddell" [source: transcription in http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/NTT/CarltononTrent/index.html [accessed 2 October 2009]]. Described in Pevsner & Williamson (1979): "C17, cup-shaped." The baptimal font in use in this church now [2019] is modern, as is its cover, quite likely from the mid-19th century building that replaced the medieval church that had been demolished in 1849.
