Described in the Parish' Short Guide to the Church of St. Andrew [http://www.wiveliscombeandhills.org.uk/wiv/wivGuide.shtml] [accessed 1 October 2009]: "The font is said to be Norman. It was removed from the church in the 1829 rebuild and was used as a garden ornament for many years. It has since been recovered and placed in its rightful position, surmounted by a handsome oak cover of Edwardian construction. A small font was placed under the gallery in 1829 and the mark where it stood can still be seen behind the South Churchwarden’s seat." Not mentioned in Pevsner (1958). The Church of England 'Wivey and the Hills' web page [http://www.wiveychurches.org.uk/wiveliscombe.html] [accessed 1 October 2009] notes and illustrates the font: "The oldest part of the church is the 12th century Norman Font which was returned in 1924 from the garden of Berry's on Town Hill where it had been used for many years as an ornament." The National Monuments Record [http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/details/default.aspx?id=270127] [accessed 1 October 2009], hoever, notes: "Font octagonal C14 on restored base." The font consists of an octagonal basin with plain sides widely chamfered at the bottom, raised on a plain cylindrical stem and a modern three-step plinth. The wooden cover of traceried open-work appears modern.
