There is an entry for Sampford [Brett] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST0840/sampford-brett/] [accessed 2 April 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this church in the National Monuments Record [Listing NGR: ST0894840199] reports: "Octagonal font with trefoil headed cusping, base may be an inverted medieval bowl". Not mentioned in Pevsner (1958). The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 5, 1985) notes: "The church was mentioned in 1239 [...] The church of ST. GEORGE was probably so dedicated by 1306 when Adam Brett was granted a fair at the feast of St. George [...] At its restoration the church was described as being of 'a very early character, Anglo-Norman' with lancet windows in the south wall of the chancel. [...] The north transept dates from c. 1300, and the tower is probably of the 15th century. Between 1835 and 1843 the chancel, vestry, and west end of the nave were completely rebuilt and the west porch and organ chamber added [...] The base of the font may be a medieval bowl inverted."
