Church Notes: "ST. PAUL'S church was so called in 1191. [...] Before the Dissolution the abbey church (fn. 760) was apparently dedicated to St. Mary and St. Aidhelm. (fn. 761) In the early 20th century an additional or alternative dedication was to ST. PETER AND ST. PAUL. (fn. 762) In 1988 all four saints were invoked. " [cf. VCH entry in bib.]

The Victoria County History (Wiltshire, vol. 14, 1991) notes: "In 1191 Malmesbury abbey was granted the right to appropriate the parish church, St. Paul's church 'in atrio monasterii', to endow lights in the abbey church. [...] Nothing survives of the churches and other buildings of the abbey which stood before the 12th century. [...] Parts of the crossing, transepts, and nave [...] of the 12th-century church survive"; there is no mention of a font in the VCH entry for this parish. A disused octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with a lozenge or diamond inscribed in a quatrefoil in a square; the underbowl chamfer is crenellated; the round basin well is lead-lined. [NB: the Abbey goes back to the 7th century, but we have no information on the original font of this church -- cf. Index entry for Malmesbury No. 2 for a later font in the Abbey church].
