There is an entry for Martock [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST4619/martock/] [accessed 14 February 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 4, 1978) notes: "Martock church, in the centre of a large pre-Conquest estate, was probably a minster of royal foundation. It was first mentioned in 1156 when it was confirmed as a possession of the abbey of Mont St. Michel (Manche) [...] The mid-13th-century east wall of the chancel is the earliest surviving feature in the [present] building although it may represent the lengthening of an earlier chancel" [no font mentioned in the VCH entry]. The National Monuments Record [http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=422626] [accessed 22 September 2009] notes: "C15 octagonal font with 2 cusped panels [on] each face of bowl, with panelled underbowl and shaft: nicely detailed". Not mentioned in Pevsner (1958). The lower base and plinth are modern replacements.
