There are three entries for this [Long] Sutton [variand spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST4625/long-sutton/] [accessed 7 February 2018], none of which mentions cleric or church in it. Pevsner (1958) mentions two fonts: "One in the churchyard, defaced. It resembles that at Ruishton, octagonal with bold buttress-like pieces in the diagonals and sculpture on the four uncovered faces." The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 3, 1974) notes: "Fragments of Norman masonry preserved beneath the pulpit precede the earliest documentary evidence for the church. [...] About 1200 Athelney abbey, which had owned an estate at Sutton from the 9th century, gave the church to Bishop Savaric (bishop 1192–1205) to form a prebend in Wells Cathedral, to be held by successive abbots. In return the church was appropriated, and before 1227 a vicarage was ordained [...] There is little evidence of the earlier churches on the site [...] The [present] building dates almost entirely from the late 15th century, an order to dedicate the work having been issued in 1493 [...] The 15th-century octagonal font, carved with quatrefoils, has a Jacobean cover." [cf. Index entry for Long Sutton No. 2 for the 15th-century font in use].
