Font Notes:
There is an entry for Bridgwater [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST2937/bridgwater/] [accessed 9 April 2018], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Font here not mentioned in Pevsner (1958). The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 6, 1962) notes: "Between 1088 and c. 1107 Walter of Douai gave the church of Bridgwater with all tithes to the monastery of Bath;" the VCH entry mentions no font in this church, but it mentions a modern font in the later Church of St. John the Baptist in Bridgwater. The font in this church is noted and illustrated by Cheryl Morgan in IgoUgo [http://www.igougo.com/attractions-reviews-b99901-Bridgwater-St._Marys_Church.html] [accessed 16 September 2009]: "The font dates from 1460". The font consists of an octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with floral motifs inscribed in large quatrefoils, the underbowl chamfer with a large rosette on each side, moulding below; the short stem is octagonal and plain, and splays on to a moulded lower base and a small octagonal plinth; the whole is raised on a modern second plinth made of reddish marble. The wooden cover is octagonal, a low pyramid, with a tiny cross finial; appears modern.
