Font Notes:
Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "This town is not named in the book of Domesday, being a hamlet to the town of Babingley. [...] The Church is dedicated to St. Peter, and is a rectory", names "John de Gislyngham" as first recorded rector in 1300, and adds: "On November 22, 1486, the Bishop granted license to the inhabitants, to collect the alms of good people, in the city and diocese of Norwich, for the rebuilding their parish church, lately burnt by a sudden fire." White's Directory of 1845 informs that the church here "was built in 1487, after the old one had been burnt down". The present font is described without date in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "Octagonal, big, with two blank arched panels to each side." Illustrated in Knott (2006). The font consists of an octagonal basin raised on an octagonal pedestal stem and a two-step plinth, the last two made of blocks; the basin appears to be the only original part, and it shows evidence of much repair; the underbowl is moulded and may have been re-cut. The wooden font cover has openwork and many crocketed pinnacles; appears 19th-century.
