Church Notes: church here was restored in 1854
Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church of Wimbotsham is dedicated to St. Mary, is a single pile of rag-stone and bolder, covered with reed, with a broad square tower of the aforesaid materials, embattled and coped with free stone, with a carved pinnacle at each corner, in which hang three bells [...] Rectors. 1313, Ralph Swyer, presented by Sir Thomas de Ingaldesthorp, Knt." The font here is described in Dashwood & Boutell (1849): "Between the north and south doors now stands the font, a plain octangular block of stone, resting on a shaft of similar form: it is lined with lead, and has a drain." A baptismal font of a very different nature is illustrated in Knott (2006), a cylindrical basin with deeply-carved foliage motifs around the upper and lower sides, plain in between, raised on a moulded circular pedestal and octagonal plinth. This is surely the font described in Pevsner & Wilson (1999) as being "by William Lawrie, 1854" [NB: we have no information on the whereabouts of the one mentioned in Dashwood & Boutell above, but it is interesting to point out that Pevsner & Wilson (1999) note that the old "chancel was taken down and replaced during the restorations of 1853-4, instigated by the Rev. G. E. Dahswood", who was one of the authors of the comunication that described the old font to the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society in 1849 [cf. supra]]. [NB: William Lawrie was the same stone mason responsible for the restoration work on the font at Downham Market].
