Scene Description: Source caption: "St Mary, Whitton. Attractive enough outside, but with fabulous stained glass within. Recently re-opened after extensive repairs - so well done that they are difficult to detect."

Scene Description: Source caption: "St Mary, Whitton. As soon as you enter your eye is drawn to the two incredibly beautiful Morris & Co windows in the chancel, one of 1893 when both William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones were still alive, the other of 1912 when their inspiration was still strongly felt and their designs were still being used. There is an entry for this Whitton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SJ3409/whitton/] [accessed 25 August 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. There is no mention of a church or chapel here in Anderson (1864). Newman & Pevsner (2006) note a Norman nave and chancel, but a later font: "C14. Octagonal, but with a round lip and base." Baptismal font consisting of a basin that is round at the upper rim moulding, then cut into an octagonal shape with a convex underbowl; the short stem is the opposite: octagonal at the top and round below; on a round lower base and a modern plinth. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SO5758772860] notes: "Church. C12 chancel and nave, C14 tower, restored and chancel extended 1891 [...] C14 octagonal font located in tower." [NB: we have no information to what extent the font has been re-cut, nor de we know its original shape; it is quite possible the font was just a plain tub originally]. The parish website [http://www.whitton-stmarys.org.uk/] [accessed 29 April 2010] reports: "In the base of the tower is a Baptistry with a mainly Norman font with Victorian renovations. It is unusual to have a font in its own Baptistry rather than just inside the door. Sadly this area is at present out of bounds due to the instability of the surrounding fabric." The entry for this church in the CRSBi (2019) states: "The only Romanesque feature is a 12thc S doorway decorated with sculpture."
