Font Notes:
One of the Domesday entries transcribed and translated in Blomefield (1805-1810) reports "the moiety of the church" here: "William de Scohies had the lands of 7 freemen, with the moiety of another, and Odar held it of William; of these his predecessor, Ralph de Beaufoe, had the protection only, in the reign of King Edward; containing 45 acres, and then a carucate and a half, and the moiety of a church, valued at 10s. with 12 acres." [NB: this William de Scohies [aka Escois], had received also "Salthus" from William the Conqueror, according to Stagg's history of Salthouse [www.salthousehistory.co.uk/stagg2b.html] [accessed 17 September 2013]]. Blomefield (ibid.) adds: "The Church is dedicated to All-Saints, and was a rectory of two medieties" [cf. supra]. The present font is described in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "Octagonal. Against the stem four lions, against the bowl four plain shields and four plain roses." Noted and illustrated in Knott (2005). The underbowl has angel heads at the angles; on the stem sides, between the seated lions are very thin buttresses; raised on an octagonal plinth. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat; appears modern. [NB: we have no information on the font(s) of the earlier church here].
