Blomefield (1805-1810) writes on St. Cuthbert's: "I know nothing of its foundation, but find it was given by King Stephen [i.e., 1135-1154] to William de Warren Earl Warren and Surrey, who gave it to the canons of the Holy Cross, when he founded that house, to which it became annexed and appropriated, and the Prior received all the tithes, and served the cure by one of the canons, to the Dissolution [...] The present building consists of a square tower, a nave, and chancel, which are thatched, a south isle, south porch, and south chapel, which are leaded". Martin (1779) writes of a font in this church: "The font is octagon on a like shaft and plain." The English Heritage entry [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-384742-church-of-st-cuthbert-thetford-norfolk] [accessed 7 March 2013] [Listing NGR: TL8712083067] notes: "Square C11 font bowl with incised arcading to rim standing on later octagonal shaft. The above descriptions are contradictory and leading to confusion. If the present basin is original, it has been re-cut, re-carved and re-set on a later pedestal base of octagonal shape; at present the basin corresponds to the description in English Heritage [cf. supra], but even the date shoulb be subject to further questioning.
