Font Notes:
Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church of Swaffham is built in the form of a cathedral, having a nave, north and south isles, a chancel, and two transept chapels, [...] making it in the shape of a cross. It is a lofty magnificent Gothick pile, of a very venerable aspect, being the largest and most beautiful parish church in the neighbourhood; the whole is covered with lead, and built for the most part with flint, freestone, brick, &c.; the upper part of the nave is coped and embattled with free-stone. At the west end of which is a stately large and lofty foursquare tower built entirely of free-stone and embattled; about the water-table, and under the battlements are these shields [...] The emblems of St. Peter and St. Paul, to whom the church is dedicated. [...] At the west end of the nave, stands a stone font with an high wainscot cover". Blomefield (ibid.) names "Turchillus, presbyter, of Swaffham in the reign of King Hen. II" as first recorded rector here, sometime between 1154 and 1174. By the time of Pevsner & Wilson (1999), however, that font must have been replaced, as the latter report the font as "1851, of Caen stone". [NB: we have no information on the fonts from the original 12th-century church, and the Gothi on mentioned in Blomefield [cf. supra]].
