Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church is dedicated to St. Mary, and is a very antique plain building, consisting of a nave about 50 feet long, and 20 broad, with a chancel, both covered with thatch; at the west end of the nave is a little four square-tower of rag, and car stone with 2 bells, and a cap to it covered with tile. [...] Rectors. Instituted 1300, Peter de Casteleyn, presented by the abbot, &c. of Bury." The present font in the 19th-century church is octagonal and decorated cusped motifs; probably dates from 1858, the date of construction. The medieval church nearby, Old St. Mary's, is in ruins, abandoned at about the same time as the new building went up. [NB: we have no information on the font of that original church here].
