Blomefield (1805) notes: "St. George and the dragon, and the arms of Shimpling, are carved on the font". In Chambers (1829) with the same information, probably after Blomefield [NB: we have no visual corroboration of either of these motifs; there are several shields in quatrefoils on the sides of the basin, but they appear to be blank]. Parker (1855) remarks: "The font is curious early P[erpendicular]. Noted in Pevsner (1975) as probably of the 14th century. Baptismal font consisting of a shallow octagonal basin decorated with tracery (trefoils, shield in a quatrefoil, arches, etc.), raised on a base made up of eight clustered colonnettes with moulded capitals and bases; octagonal lower base with graded moulding; modern quadrangular plinth. The wooden cover has a round base, four raised ribs and a cross finial; modern as well.
