Blomefield (1805-1810) notes: "St. George and the dragon, and the arms of Shimpling, are carved on the font". In Chambers (1829) with the same information, probably after Blomefield. Described in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "C15 and octagonal. Against the stem four lions; against the bowl the signs of the Evangelists and four demi figures of angels with shields containing the Instruments of the Passion.- Font cover. Just the base, but this seems C15 too." [NB: the angels of the basin are not demi-figures, nor do they hold shields, as claimed by Pevsner & Wilson above; they are full-figure angels holding some of the Instruments of the Passion (e.g.: the angel on the panel to the right of Mattew's angel holds a ladder)]. Noted and illustrated in Knott (2005).
