There is an entry for Elmham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TF9821/north-elmham/] [accessed 5 February 2014] with one church in it. Bolemefield (1805-1810) notes that the manor of Elmham "was held by Bishop Ailmar, in the time of the Confessor [i.e., Edward, last Anglo-Saxon king of England (+1066)] [...] In this manor of Elmham there was then a church, endowed with 60 acres [...] It appears that here was, in the Conqueror's and King Edward's time, a church, well endowed with 50 acres and a carucate of land. Herbert Bishop of Norwich is said to have new built it, in the reign of King William II. being so enjoined by the Pope, for his simony, and appropriated the rectory of this church to the priory of Norwich, founded by him". [NB: English Heritage [Listing NGR: TF9882321609] reports a "Former church converted into a fortified manor house. Probably built by Bishop Herbert de Losinga (1091-1119) on the site of the Anglo-Saxon Cathedral of Elmham. Converted by Bishop Despencer in late C14. Ferruginous conglomerate with flint core and ashlar dressings. Brick dressings to C14 work. Roofless. Western tower with semicircular stair turret, aisleless nave, continuous transept with armpit towers and apse. Evidence for ashlar dressed tower and west transept arches, north and south nave doorways and entrances into armpit towers. C14 work includes a semicircular tower base matching the original stair turret and several masonry partitions with brick dressings. The site is surrounded by C14 earthworks. S.E. Rigold "The Anglian Cathedral of North Elmham, Norfolk" Medieval Archaeology, VI-VII, 1962-3; S.R. Heywood, "The Ruined Church at North Elmham, "Journal of the British Archaeological Association,CXXXV, 1982. The building is also a scheduled Ancient Monument." Pevsner & Wilson (1999) mention a "Plain, C17" font in this church. Knott (2006) illustrates the font in the context of the church interior: an octagonal basin with shields in cusped panels, the underbowl moulded; on a pedestal; the font cover of openwork, on eight colonnettes that rest on the rim of the font. The basin and underbowl sections appear to be modern, perhaps 19th-century; the lower base and plinth appear earlier, Perpendicular; is the stem Victorian? The wooden cover is octagonal, with a frame around the rim of the font and eight thin shafts supporting the octagonal top with crocketed arrises and cross finial; probably 19th-century as well; it bears an inscription around the lower frame with the presentation information.
