Font Notes:
Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church is dedicated to St. Peter [...] The tower is square, and stands on the south side of the church, and serves for a porch; there is only one bell; the church and chancel are tiled, the N[orth] vestry is ruined: it is neat and clean, being new repaired and beautified", and names "Hugh Perpunt of Kilverdeston" as its first recorded rector, in 1317. Three entries for this parish in Domesday (fol. 31, 32, Elingham; fol. 90, Ailincham; fol. 118, Aluncham] without a mention of church or priest in it. The present font is noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "Octagonal, of porphyry, 1869". Noted and illustrated in Knott (2006). Octagonal basin in porphyry, decorated with symbols and raised on a central shaft and nine angle colonnettes of green marble, on a cylindrical lower base; this lower base has an inscription that includes the date '1869', presumably the date of the font. The wooden cover is flat and round, with metal decoration and handle; probably contemporary with the font. [NB: we have no information on the font of the early-14th century church here].
