There are five entries in the Domesday survey for Grimston, with variant spellings of the toponym: "Grimestuna", "Ernestuna" or Grunestuna" [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TF7221/grimston/] [accessed 18 November 2013], but neither church nor cleric is mentioned in any of them. Blomefield (1805-1810) mentions the church of Grimston in the context of Sir Benedict de Grimston [aka de Breccles] in the 9th year of Edward II [i.e., 1316], and adds: "Walter occurs rector in 1242; the same probably with Walter de Thorp, rector in 1253", which corroborates the existence of a church here at least by the mid-13th century; "The church is a regular pile, with a nave, 2 isles, and a chancel covered with lead; a large four-square tower, and 5 bells". The present font is noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "Octagonal, with five E[arly] E[nglish] columns." Noted and illustrated in the Grimston Parish Council and Village site [http://grimstonpc.norfolkparishes.gov.uk/photos/photo?photo_id=2194852] [accessed 4 August 2009]: "The 13th century font stands on five columns, and is covered with a cover made in the 1890's […] The Early English Font was given a new cover in 1895, which hangs from the roof beam and raises and lowers with a counter-balanced mechanism". [NB: the octagonal basin is rather irregular in its facets; could it have been a square basin trimmed at the angles late?]
