Font Notes:
Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Rectory manor. Always belonged to the rectors, for in the Conqueror's survey it appears that there were then divers lands and services belonging to the church; but at the appropriation in 1402, it was taken from it [...] The Church is dedicated to St. James the Apostle". A font in this church is noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "Octagonal, with shields in barbed quatrefoils, i.e., Kentish tracery." Described and illustrated in Knott (2006): " The font, with shields in lozenges, is 14th century and must be contemporary with the grand rebuilding of the time. It is kept full of holy water to act as a stoup". The moulded and decorated [cf. supra] basin is raised on a plain stem, a moulded lower base and a one-step plinth, all octagonal in shape. [NB: we have no information on the font of the church that was mentioned in the 1086 Survey].
