The Domesday survey entry for "Eccleuartuna" mentions neither church nor cleric in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) notes: "The Church of Clenchwarton is dedicated to St. Margaret; it consists of a single isle, or a nave, a chancel covered with lead, and has a square tower, with 4 bells [...] The church is a rectory", and names "Robert Russell" as its first recorded rector, presented by the King in 1268. The present font is noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "Font. Octagonal, 1835." The wooden font cover is modern and appears in Edmund Czajkowski & Son Ltd.'s catalogue [www.czajkowski-furniture.co.uk/new-church-furniture.htm] [accessed 21 July 2009]. [NB: we have no information on the font of the original (?) 13th-century church here].
