Blomfield (1805-1810) quotes the Domesday entry for 'Benham' (fol. 187), which mentions neither church nor priest in it, and writes: "The Church is dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, and is a regular building, 45 yards long, having a nave, two isles, chancel, south porch, and vestry, all leaded; a square tower, with a spire of wood covered with lead, on its top, and in it five bells, a clock and saints bell." No font is mentioned in the entry. The font is noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1999) as a plain cylindrical, of the 14th century; this same source dates the tall woodn font cover to 1864; it is of the rim-buffet type, but has open arches instead of the usual doors that give access to the inner well of the font.
