The Domesday entry for "Witona" mentions neither church nor cleric. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church is a rectory, dedicated to St. Margaret", and names "Mr. Roger the Saham." as first recorded rector, in 1318. The present font is described in Pevsner & Wilson (1997): "Octagonal, C14. With a whole pattern book of tracery patterns." The font, illustrated in www.geograph.org.uk/photo/917155 [accessed 9 July 2009] looks like a Victorian version of the Decorated design: an octagonal basin with tracery decoration on the sides, raised on a central shaft and eight round colonnettes, and an octagonal lower base. The font is either modern or has been greatly restored. The wooden cover is octagonal, flat and plain; modern. [NB: we have no information on the earlier font of the medieval church]
