view of font cover
Scene Description: Source caption: "The oldest feature is an ornate wooden font cover. Though parts of the font cover are Victorian, much of it dates to the 14th or even the 13th century. One of the volunteer guides told us that the cover is so fragile that they don't dare dust it, instead they simply blow on the surface to remove as much dust as possible without actually touching the medieval wood." [NB: another source [cf. FontNotes] gives the date of the cover as 1911].

No entry found for Potsmouth in the Domesday survey. A font here is illustrated with a drawing dated 14 February 1863, by Miss Allen in volume 5 of the 'Ilam Anastatic Drawing Society' (1864?) [http://www.archive.org/details/ilamanastasicdra05ilamuoft] [accessed 7 July 2009]. The font consists of an octagonal basin with vertical sides, with small florette (?) motifs on the underbowl; the octagonal pedestal stem has a pointed arch with supporting columns with capitals and bases; octagonal lower base and hexagonal (?) plinth, both plain [NB: this font may have disappeared]. The present font however, is a cylindrical basin raised on clustered columns, probably of the 19th-century. The entry for this building in Historic England [Listing NGR: SZ6319399229] mentions no font in it. [NB: the Memorials & Monuments in Portsmouth site [www.memorials.inportsmouth.co.uk] [accessed 7 July 2009] illustrates the present font and the tall wooden cover, a tall crocketed spire with dove finial dating from 1911; according to this source the font is located in the south-west corner of the nave, in the un-roofed part; the cover, on the other hand, is in the chancel [NB: the font located in the uncovered part of the nave is moder, late-Victorian?]]. [NB: we have no information on the whereabouts of the old octagonal font mentioned above]
