Font Notes:
There are nine entries for Stratton [St Mary and St Michael] [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/XX0000/stratton-st-mary-and-st-michael/] [accessed 18 October 2015], two of which mention a church and church lands in each. Blomfield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church is dedicated to St. Margaret [...] The present tower is square, and hath 6 bells in it, being a very large one, but not carried to that height as at first designed, by a third part; it was built in 1422, the old steeple being decayed [...] The nave is an ancient building [...] The south porch is tiled, the church and chancel of an equal height, are thatched, and the south isle and its chapel, with a vault adjoining thereto, are leaded". Blomefield (ibid.) names "Peter (de Stratton)" the first recorded rector here, in 1244. The font and the cover are noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1997); the font simply as "octagonal, with quatrefoils"; the cover, "by Sir Ninian Comper, 1898-1902". The font and cover are illustrated in Knott (2009). The octagonal basin has crenellations at the upper rim and around the lower side, with large quatrefoils with inscribed rosettes on the sides; floral motifs also on the underbowl chamfer; buttresses at the angles of the octagonal stem; plain octagonal lower base. The wooden cover, painted in bright colours, has four vertical crocketed panels of tracery mounted on an octagonal base. [NB: we have no information on the font from the original church here].
