The Domesday entry for "Remingelanda" records neither church nor cleric in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church of Ringland was formerly a rectory [...] Julian de Swathfield, lord of the manor under Bishop Beaufoe, gave this rectory to the abbey of West Derham, which was confirmed to them by King John in his 2d year [...] probably on the grant of it in King John's time, when a vicarage was settled [...] Thomas, occurs vicar, in 1288 [...] The Church has 3 isles and a chancel, a square tower and 5 bells." [NB: the "Bishop Beaufoe", the holder of this place, must be William de Beaufeu [aka Beaufai, Beaufoe, Beaufour, Belfou, Bello Fargo, bishop of Thetford in 1086]. The donation of the church to the abbey of West Dereham was confirmed in king John's second year, 1200, but the original transfer would have occurred earlier, datin the church therefore to between 1086 and 1199. Blomefield (ibid.) gives no dedication for this church. White's Directory of 1845 notes: "a richly carved antique font", and gives the dedication as St. Peter;s, as at present. Thomas (1846) writes: "On opening the great south door, which is in good preservation, the first object presenting itself is a massive octagonal font, in the Decorated style, and raised on three high steps. Its existing state will indicate the taste in which reparations of our village sanctuaries are too generally conducted. At the instance, it appears, of a late visitor, this elegant memorial of olden piety has been cleansed from the lime-wash that encrusted it; but instead of being allowed to remain in its natural state, it irked us to find the whole besmeared with a vile daubing of flesh colour. It stands, where in every case the baptismal font should stand, just within the principal entrance, and its leaded bowl is provided with a drain to permit the consecrated fluid to escape." Described in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "Against the stem four lions, against the bowl the signs of the Evangelists, two demi-figures of angels, and two flowers." Noted and illustrated in Knott (2009) with date of the 14th century. The font appears to be of the East Anglia type with a basin decorated with the symbols of the four Evangelists alternating with angels holding shields and Tudor roses on the sides; cherub heads at the underbowl angles, and square flowers on the chamfer below; sedente lions against the sides of the octagonal-to-square stem alternate with buttresses at the angles. The wooden cover is octagonal, plain and flat. [NB: we have no information on the font of the original church here].
