The Domesday entry for "Plumstede" mentions neither church nor cleric in it. Bloemfield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church is a rectory dedicated to St. Michael, and the patronage was, in the reign of Edward I.[i.e., 1272-1307] in the priory of Merton; the rector had 6 acres with a manse". Pevsner & Wilson (1997) note a plain octagonal font, as well as a 18th-century wooden cover "with splat balusters" in this church. Both are illustrated in Knott (2008). The font has a plain octagonal basin which may be medieval, perhaps re-tooled; it is raised on a moulded octagonal pedestal base and an octagonal plinth that appear modern, but they are white-washed. The wooden cover consists of an octagonal platform with four scrolls ribs converging at the knob finial. [NB: we have no information on the font from the ca.1300 church here].
