There is an entry for Melton Constable [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TG0331/melton-constable/] [accessed 29 January 2014], with a church reported in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The church is an old building, and contained only one isle, being a single pile, till Sir Jacob Astley, in 1681, built a neat chapel, with a vault under it of brick [...] The tower stands between the church and chancel, and is foursquare, with three bells. [...] It is a rectory dedicated to St. Peter". The present font is noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1997): "An C18 baluster." Described and illustrated in Knott (2005): "Norfolk's grandest 18th century font, looking as if it is made out of sugar." The base may be of a later date. [NB: we have no information on the font of the original church here].
