Church Notes: unfinished medieval wall paintings uncovered in 1967
The Domesday survey has several entries for Witchingham, with varying spellings, and does not make the distinction between the two present villages [Great and Little]; a single church "sine terra" is reported in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) provides descriptions for both churches; for Witchigham Parva, he writes: "The church of Wichingham Parva is dedicated to St. Faith", and names as first recorded rector "Mr. Hugh de London occurs rector in 1293, the Bishop's official." The present font here is noted and illustrated in Knott (2004) as a "Victorian font […] from nearby Whitwell" [NB: Pevsner & Wilson (1997) inform that the Church of St. Michael in Reepham was originally the parish church for Whitwell but has been used as a hall since 1970; Little Witchingham St. Faith's, on the other hand, was "redundant and ruinous until repaired in 1974-5" [NB: the fabric of the church goes back to the 12th century, but we have no information on the earlier fonts of either of these churches] [cf. Index entry for Whitwell, Norfolk, for the disappeared early font of that church].
