Described and illustrated in www.ekatontapyliani.org [accessed 24 June 2009]. Cruciform baptismal font said to date back to the 4th century, one of the oldest and best preserved fonts of the Orthodox East; the arms of the cross are even in size; the sides are made of marble and are decorated with four Maltese crosses inscribed in circles on each of the long sides of the cruciferous basin, three on the narrow sides of the font (12 sides altogether); at the centre is a pedestal on which it is suggested that the minister would stand to confer baptism on the catechumens; the latter would descend the steps on the western side of the font, receive the sacrament and exit ascending via the steps on the east arm of the cross.
