There is an entry for "Hempsdteda" in the hundred of Happing in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TG4028/hempstead/] [accessed 14 January 2014], but it has mention of church or cleric in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church is a rectory, dedicated to St. Andrew [...] John de Snitterton occurs rector about 1290", and that there is valiuation dating to reign of Edward I [1272-1307], which appear to be the earliest dates related to this church. The present font is described in Pevsner & Wilson (1997): "Perp[endicular], Octagonal. Four lions against the base, four shields and four flowers against the bowl." Noted and illustrated in Knott (2005). The shields appear blank now; at the underbowl angles, angels displaying their wings, and a graded moulding below; besides the sedente lions there are buttresses at the angles of the octagonal-to-square pedestal base. On an octagonal plinth. The wooden cover is flat, octagonal and plain; appears modern.
