The Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (1883-1884) record the purchase of "an ancient font of sandstone, 12 inches in diameter and 7 inches in height, the cavity 8 inches diameter and 3 inches in depth". The purchase appears to be part of a larger collection of objects from Duffus, Elginshire [today, Moray], Scotland. The medieval (13th century?] Church of St. Peter, at Duffus, was in ruins and abandoned when a new church was built in the 1860s. This font may have been from the old church, but it is not confirmed [NB: the measurements given in the sourcellow are not representative of a 13th-century font; was it a stoup?]
