Church Notes: Original church of the monastery said to have been founded in 1165/8 by Doña Sancha de Frías for Premonstratensian canons; it burned down, and was re-built ca. 1580; the east apse is original -- until recently the old monastery had been used as a seminary [Monasterio-Noviciado de los hermanos de las Escuelas Cristianas]. More recently [visited Dec. 2012] a retirement residence for priests of the order, centre for spiritual and cultural activities, etc.
Described and illustrated in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- ) as a sandstone baptismal font probably of the early 13th century, consisting of a hemispherical basin with ribbed pattern on the outside, concave ribbing on the inside, raised on a short cylindrical stem decorated with a single floral motif, and a splaying lower base; there is a single metal staple at the upper rim. There is a stone holy-water stoup by the entranceway, a roughly hemispherical basin with upper rim moulding and fluted sides, raised on a square base with floral emblems on the sides; it appears composite and of a later-medieval or later date. [cf. Index entries for Bujedo de Candepajares Nos. 2 and 3 for two other fonts reported in the garden of the nearby Monasterio de Santa Maria]
