There are two entries for Syleham [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TM2078/syleham/] [accessed 31 December 2019], one of which reports "1 church. 0.13 church lands" in it. Parker (1855) notes: "Font, transition N[orman], an octagon, on a square pedestal." Cautley (1982) notes a font cover of 1667 in this church. In Mortlock-1998- ) with date in the 14th century. The http://www.onesuffolk.co.uk/SylehamPC/Church/ web site notes: "Immediately in view as one enters the church is the font, thought to be 14th century on an earlier base – suggested to be a very old font turned upside down. The wooden cover is dated 1667." The CRSBI (2008) illustrates the font and notes: "The font is small, plain and octagonal, possibly 14thc. according to Mortlock. It stands on a much earlier base with angle volutes; probably part of the inverted bowl of a 12thc. Font […] It seems certain that the font base is an inverted font bowl cut down, although no other font in the area follows this design." [NB: the CRSBI is right in pointing out the unlikely design of the base as a baptismal font; perhaps it is not a basin at all].
