There are two entries for this Dinnington [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SK5285/dinnington/] [accessed 26 February 2018], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. The 'Guide to St Leonard's Church, Dinnington' [www.stleonardsdinningtonsheffield.co.uk/history.html] [accessed 26 February 2018] notes: "The first recorded church in Dinnington was founded by William de Warenne, Earl of Surrey [...] He built Dinnington church some time before his death in 1088. This original church was destroyed by fire around 1318. It is not known when the church was rebuilt but the Norman tower base and pillars appear to have survived the fire from descriptions around 400 years later [...] By the 1780’s this medieval church was in a poor state and was demolished in 1785. The Lord of the Manor, Robert Athorpe, built a new church on the same site and changed its dedication from St Nicholas to St Leonard [...] The narthex is the latest addition to the structure of the church, being built in 1985/6. It is a two storey structure; the ground floor contains the old limestone font". The present font may, however, be modern, as the Archbishop Thomson's Visitation Returns for the Diocese of York, 1865 [entry 137, p. 116], in Royle & Larsen (Helsington: Borthwick Publications, 2006) notes: "We have no Font nor anywhere to put one". The present web site of the parish [cf. supra] illustrates the present font, which is modern and made of wood, labelled: "A wooden baptism stand was given in memory of Harold and Irene Hazelhurst."
