There are two entries for this Chilton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST2939/chilton-trinity/] [accessed 6 May 2015], neither of which mention cleric or church in it. The font here is not mentioned in Pevsner (1958). The Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 6, 1992) notes: "The plan and part of the fabric of the church are of the later 11th century [...] The font is Perpendicular in style with a Jacobean lid." Baptismal font consisting of an octagonal basin with vertical sides decorated with floral motifs inscribed in quatrefoils, ogee panels on the underbowl chamfer; raised on an octagonal stem with trefoiled arches or windows on the sides; moulded octagonal lower base. One of the sides of the upper rim shows damage consistent with the forceful removal of the old cover staple. The wooden cover is a plain octagonal pyramid about three feet tall. [NB: we have no information on the font of the original late-11th century church here].
