Font Notes:
The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Somerset, vol. 5, 1985) notes: "Bicknoller church probably originated as a manorial chapel [...] Ingram of Bicknoller, chaplain, recorded in Edward I's reign [i.e., 1272-1307] [...] The small size of the nave and the thickness of its south wall, which is unbuttressed, suggest a 12th-century origin, which may be corroborated by a 12th-century pillar piscina in the chancel [...] The heavily recut font is of the 15th century". The present font is an octagonal mounted design typical of the Perpendicular style, but most likely re-cut in the 19th century; it has the usual floral and heraldic motifs inscribed in quatrefoil panels on the basin sides, the concave underbowl chamfer melting nicely into the octagonal pedestal base, the angles decorated with clustered colonnettes. [NB: we have no information on the original font of this 12th-century church].
