INFORMATION

FontID: 14643BUJ
Church/Chapel: Iglesia de Santa María [aka Monasterio-Noviciado de los Hermanos de las Escuelas Cristianas
Church Patron Saints: St. Mary the Virgin
Country Name: Spain
Location: Burgos, Castilla y León
Directions to Site: the monastery of Bugedo/Bujedo is located 9 km S of Miranda de Ebro, near Foncea, pass the bridge, then left
Ecclesiastic Region: Diócesis de Burgos
Historical Region: Castilla la Vieja
Font Location in Church: [cf. FontNotes]
Century and Period: 12th - 13th century, Romanesque
Church Notes: Original church of the monastery said to have been founded in 1165/8 by Doña Sancha de Frías for Premonstratensian canons; it burned down, and was re-built ca. 1580; the east apse is original -- until recently the old monastery had been used as a seminary [Monasterio-Noviciado de los hermanos de las Escuelas Cristianas]. More recently [visited Dec. 2012] a retirement residence for priests of the order, centre for spiritual and cultural activities, etc. [Actualmente el monasterio está habitado por los Hermanos de La Salle, que se encargan de su mantenimiento desde 1891, utilizando las dependencias como residencia, Centro de Espiritualidad y lugar de encuentro de campamentos y colonias de jóvenes].
Sáenz Rodríguez (2004) and the Enciclopedia del románico en La Rioja (2008) report two baptismal fonts in this monastery, now used as garden ornaments. One is located near the entrance to the building and is described as having a ribbed basin. [NB: we have no information about the origin of this font, but the Enciclopedia… (ibid.) notes that neither of these two fonts is the one originally from Foncea, said to have been moved to Bujedo ca. 1968]. [cf. Index entry for Bujedo No. 2 for the other font in this monastery; and Bujedo No. 1 for a font at the parish church of Santa Maria [NB: the monastery fonts are not mentioned in the Enciclopedia del románico en Castilla y León (2002- )]. On-site notes: an object roughly fitting this description is found in the outer gardens of the monastery, among the trees and shrubbery; the object has the shape of a typical font of the area: a hemispherical basin decorated with a roll moulding at the upper rim , and a pattern of wide ribs around the basin sides and underbowl; it is raised on a square base with protrusions at the angles that may have been ball motifs or heads, perhaps, but the surface is now too worn to discern the original work. The inner well of the basin has been fitted with hardware to turn it into a fountaing that spouts water from a single outlet. The stone is covered in mosses and lichens.
