view of church interior - nave - looking east

Font Notes:
Described and illustrated in Sáenz Rodríguez (2004) and in the Enciclopedia del románico en La Rioja (2008) as a Gothic baptismal font of the 13th century but one that retains much of the Romanesque typology, a genuine product of a workshop that produced fonts in the Sonsierra area. Noted and illustrated in Romanico Digital [www.romanicodigital.com/cedar/pila-bautismal-53377.aspx] [accessed 13 August 2020]. The font consists of a squat modern base on which is raised the round basin with tapering sides decorated with an arcade of nine slightly pointed arches, each containing a human figure: eight of them appear to be clerics, some holding staves, others with hands/arms in different positions; the ninth could be an angel holding a musical instrument, as identified in Sáenz Rodríguez (ibid.) and in the Enciclopedia… (ibid.); in the spandrels of the arcade are four human heads in the same style as those of the lower figures, and five fleurs-de-lis; the upper band of relief is so badly eroded that the motif on it can no longer be discerned in some areas, but it appears to be a vine.
